Failure to pass a budget by midnight Tuesdat ups the shortfall to morethan $26 billion due to the loss of education-relatedx budget fixes, Schwarzenegger said at a presxs conference Wednesday. He also announcedr an executive order adding a third furlough day each monthj for state workers thoughJune 30, a move expected to free up an additionalp $425 million in the new fiscal year. Stater workers will be furloughed the first three Friday of each monthexcept July, when they will commencs July 10 and run for thre weeks, state labor secretaru Vickie Bradshaw said at the press conference.
Some workers, such as statr firefighters and the peopls who processunemployment claims, will be exempt from Furlougb Fridays, Bradshaw said. Although the governord called for thespecial session, it is up to the Legislaturs to schedule it. When it will be held is yet to be Schwarzenegger will meet with the state controller and state treasurere later Wednesday to discuss a plan to beginn paying state billswith IOUs, and the governo said he plans to approach banks about honoring them.
