Purity is keeping its cool - Nashville Business Journal:
The Nashville-based dairy survived the Grea t Depression and WorldWar II, so the recent economic slumop seemed like part of the cycle of business, says Tim vice president of milk sales for Purity. Whitw says the company has never been a boom or bust kindof “We are in the slow growth business,” he “Our business could be described as and we’re happy with that.” achieving even modest growth in the current economid climate, has involved some uncomfortable choicee and shrewd strategic thinking.
With commerical accounts slumpinhg because of fewer people eating out and fewere day workers buying Purity itemsefor lunch, the company made the decisiohn to push retail items such as chocolatee mik, lemonade and ice tea. Inexpensive treate sell well during down White says. He’s got some numbersa to back thatstatement up. The company also made the strategi c decision to put more resources into theschoolp market, resulting in a 2.5 percenft increase in sales. Higher salez tallies weren’t easy to achieve, Whit says. As a cost-cutting measure, the company sold off its home delivert services offresh milk, ice creak and water in late 2007. Another difficult decision came when ice creaj production was transferred toan out-of-county subcontractor last That transistion was a risk that turnede out well, Wood says. “We were able to keep all the formulae intact,” he says.

Retailers bank on idea of low-price guarantees - Puget Sound Business Journal (Seattle):
But the plan will work only if large numbers ofcustomers don’t pursue the offers, which would force them to drop prices they’dc rather keep at current levels, several industrh watchers said. announced May 12 it would becomer the latest retail chai n to offer to sell products belowqlisted costs, if shoppers bring in printed ads from competitors showinfg that the same product is sellinf for a lower price there. The Minneapolis-based chaih is testing the policy in two markets Denver andOrlando — and will use those resultz to help it decide whethe to take the offer nationally, spokeswoman Delias McLinden said.
Thus Targey joins both locally managed and national chains specializinygin electronics, general goods or even fitness equipment that offer similar promises. The price-matching policies first began to sprinhg up roughly 20years ago, but really have gainedd steam in the past 10 according to Ken Manning, a marketinvg professor at . Some might think it’sz a bad time for the marketinvg approach, given that retailers are enduringslower sales: March 2009 retail sale s were down 10.6 percent from March according to the .
But severakl company owners said they see this as a more appropriatr time to offer such McLinden said Target decided to try out the policy as part of a new marketint push to emphasize its low prices durinb a timeof recession. Jim Pearse, ownere of Thornton-based chain , said maintaining such a policy makesz it easier to build customer trust at a time when peopled tend to shoparound more. “I this economy, it’s a great service to the Pearse said.
“When the competition is havinva sale, then we’re having a sale on the same … From the customer’s point of it gives them more confidence to make a But while some customers will scan ads and comparre prices of specific items, most don’t do that level of homework — and that’s what storee hope for, said Donald professor and chairman of the marketinb division of the ’s Leedsz School of Business. Instead, many shoppers will hear that a store offersa price-matching guarantee and just assumew that any business that would do that also would have low Lichtenstein said.
And they’ll buy from that stors without noticing thatwhat they’re purchasinf might be more expensive than the same item somewhere The careful shopper may find that some stores sell a uniqur product that can’t be comparedr to other stores, Manning and Lichtenstein said. Take the home-fitnes s machines at , a 10-store Coloradi chain based in Glenwood Springs. HealthStyles is the only licensefd Colorado dealer for several linesof equipment, meaning that no other store in the state could advertises a comparable price, co-owner Dave Sheriff said.
Of course, some potentialp customers still will bring in onlin ads or ads from other in which case Sheriff has to make sure the listee priceincludes freight, warranty and delivery. But if it he said, he won’t hesitate to offe the lower price in exchange for increased loyalty fromthat “Our margin goes down, but we know we’ve got a customer who knowz us and wants to buy from said the exercise physiologist, who founded the chain 16 yearw ago. “It’s more than, say, the Internet group or the groulp out of state can provide Other stores are alleged to have become too particular intheir price-matching policies and begun denying legitimate claims.

Washington Business Journal: HR & Hiring : Business Advice
Division head Carl finally had to fix the problemx in a department run by seniorrmanager Brenda. He transferred one supervisor andthreer high-ranking staff members to other He was satisfied: Once again, he showed that he could be decisive and clean But Carl had consistently ignored advice that the departmenf head was a problem, and didn't make the changes necessarh to keep the problems from resurfacing later. Brenda seemecd to be a nice person and asympathetic listener. Like Carl, she had an open-doot policy. She invited her supervisors and staff to divulgee personal confidences and to share opinions aboutyeach other.
But she never resolvedr the issues that kept them from workintogether effectively. I discovered a dark side behinx Brenda's behavior. She was both conflict-avoidant and passive-aggressive. Acting as a go-between, she carrie versions of the gossipand bad-mouthing to other people, but with a twisr that increased resentment and drove wedgee between them. Instead of holding her staff accountable for productivity and she reported to Carl that all of them hadmajorr problems. To justify her she said she'd chatted with her supervisors and and had encouraged them to put their styledifferencess aside.
Carl's permissiveness allowed Brendza to create a cultureof conflict-avoidancs and passive-aggressiveness that diminished productivity throughout her department. Unprofessional behaviord included back-stabbing, innuendos, rumors and warring leading to widespread paranoiaand over-reactions. including Brenda, tried to look busy whilde theyavoided critical-but-difficult problems and covereed their backs. Like Carl, Brenda was a long-term manager with extensive training. She coul d explain what good managers do; she simplg never did it. Because she didn't take effective action, complaints spreae throughout the division.
Other department heads mentioned the complaintds to Brenda and eventuallyto Carl. Sporadically, Carl woulsd give Brenda advice and explain his But he neverfollowed up. Carl was shocked when corporatew headquarters called him on the carpet for not beintg aneffective manager. Carl thus was motivated to give Brenda a strong talk and amediocred evaluation. That may sound like effective butit wasn't. Brenda had let things slide for She'd been talked to before, but she'ds always been given promotions when she promisedx todo better. Carl's lecturee was merely more of the same.
The best way to help people be more productive is to make them happg by listening to their hurt feelingsand anger, being sympathetic in private and promising to fight on their Brenda's sympathetic listening, but lack of consistent accountability for professionall behavior, created a management vacuum that sucked into it everyone'as hostility, nastiness and personal issues. There are no problem people, only problemn processes. Workshops, clearer descriptions of processes and and kindly suggestions and hints will cureall misunderstandings. Well-meaningg and intelligent people at all levelss in the company will put professional behavior and team goals ahea d ofpersonal agendas.
Carl and Brenda ignoredf the widespread evidence that some people simply didn't like each other and wouldn'yt collaborate, and that for some people, personal agendas took precedencd over company goals. Also, some people behave decentlgy only when they are actually held accountabled bymeaningful consequences. Otherws won't behave, no matter what.
